Giselle Sohm, born and raised in Germany, demonstrated artistic abilities from a very early age. As a young child, encouraged by her parents, she would fashion marionettes out of paper maché and use her imagination to create dolls, animals and flowers. Her adolescent years saw the establishment of an aesthetic sense that was clearly illustrated in her design and creation of fashion clothing.
Having always had a fascination with travel and a strong desire to experience the world, she left Germany. After travelling extensively she found herself in Paris, where she lived for the next 10 years, absorbing the world of art that surrounded her. Upon returning to Germany her artistic development continued, working with the respected Yugoslavian sculptor Dari, who helped mould her creative instincts with classical figurative sculpture. In 1989 Giselle finally settled in Monaco where she has since worked with a number of sculptors including the Colombian Milthon and Marc Lavalle in Nice. She has exhibited mainly in the Mediterranean area, Italy, Amsterdam and New York.
The theme running through her recent work is her love for the form and aesthetics of the human body. Many of her sculptures reflect her fascination with duality, exploring human forms. From ‘Ekstase’ in which a couple flow together, to ‘Union sans Fin’ which explores the beauty and sensuality of eternal union, her work invites the viewer to interact with each piece on an emotional level.
There is always a demand to produce more work but the artistic process can be a long and drawn out procedure, with some pieces taking months to complete. However, new sculptures will be on view shortly, Giselle is looking forward to meeting you at her future exhibitions. |
